Tandridge

Business

With more than 1,500 businesses in the district ranging from sole traders to multi-national companies, the Council works hard to promote and support appropriate business developments while maintaining the rural nature of the area. The Council's goal is to maintain prosperity in the district by supporting the necessary conditions for a strong and diverse local economy.
Unemployment is currently low at 1.0% (January 2001) and over half the district's working population commutes to London, Crawley and Gatwick, all of which are forecast to grow as employment centres.
The economy is also supported by tourism, as throughout the District there are a wide variety of pubs and restaurants catering for all price ranges and tastes, as well as beautiful countryside, conservation areas, nature reserves and places of historical and general interest. You can find out more about these in our Tourism section.
Despite being so near to London, Tandridge District is very rural. Most of the area is covered by Green Belt, with only 12% of its area developed. Just under a third of the district is open space or woodland, while over half is in agricultural use.
The area borders Reigate and Redhill in the west, Croydon in the north, Westerham and Sevenoaks to the east and East Grinstead to the south.
Caterham and Oxted provide shopping facilities for the local population and surrounding areas, while Warlingham and Whyteleafe are busy commuter towns. In addition there are a variety of local shops in villages such as Godstone, Limpsfield, Lingfield, Smallfield and Tatsfield.

Local Council

Tandridge District Council is one of 11 district councils in Surrey, providing services in partnership with Surrey County Council.
Four departments employing around 300 staff deliver the District Council services, which include benefits, business rates, community safety, council housing, council tax, elections, environmental health, parks and open spaces, planning, recycling and rubbish collection. You will find information about these in our A to Z of services.
Our annual Best Value Performance Plan sets out our aims and objectives for providing services. We also produce a number of leaflets about what we do and many of these are available on-line.
We have 42 councillors who decide the priorities and objectives which the Council will pursue, as well as the amount the Council spends. They meet regularly in committees to review reports, discuss issues and make decisions. In addition to the District and County Councils, there are also 21 parish councils in Tandridge providing local facilities and services.
